About ACNYC

ABADÁ-Capoeira New York City (ACNYC) is a growing community-based organization, which aims to educate and empower the youth through the teachings of the art of Capoeira. ACNYC programs operate in New York City Public School System and under-privileged communities in New York. We address this need by training and educating a diverse group of youth in the art of Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian art form that has been evolving for over 450 years. Capoeira combines dance, acrobatics, and vocal and instrumental music. It is an engaging and dynamic way to help youth learn movement, get exercise, gain exposure to a different culture, express themselves, and have fun!

We provide classes to youth through two programs entitled ' Ginga Kidz™' and ' ABADÁ Teens™' at several New York City public schools and community centers. Ginga Kidz™ teaches children basic movement, music techniques, and coordination while keeping them engaged, in shape, and involved in a positive physical and creative outlet for their active young minds and bodies.

ACNYC members have the opportunity to participate local and international events, enabling students to travel abroad. ACNYC teaches classes for all ages at locations throughout the city, hosts a number of annual events and collaborates with other organizations that share our vision.

In addition to our youth programs, ACNYC holds adult classes at various locations around the city. In many instances, youth learn the art of Capoeira alongside their parents and siblings. By providing a family-oriented, multicultural, multigenerational learning environment, ACNYC provides youth with positive role models and teaches by example about self-discipline, tolerance, and respect for others. We also serve the community through our participation in community events such as the New York City AIDS Walk, collaborating with community partners such as Highbridge Recreational Center and the Fresh Youth Initiative, and visiting hospitals and nursing homes to make a difference in the lives of those in need. ACNYC promotes a sense of community and self-confidence among youth, thereby helping youth in the Washington Heights area to become invested in their community and themselves.

ACNYC began in 1998 as a dream in the mind of its Founder and Executive Director, Freddy Correa, known in world of the arts as Instrutor Furacão. His vision to bring the art of Capoeira to his home neighborhood in Washington Heights and other underprivileged communities it is now a reality.
Instrutor Furacão’s ten-year journey from Hunter College, where he first discovered the art, to Brazil for three years where he became a skilled artist, and back to Washington Heights, has paved the way for scores of men, women, and children in under-privileged communities to learn and benefit from this unique art form.

ACNYC shares name with the International Brazilian Association for the Support and Development of the Art of Capoeira (ABADÁ-Capoeira) and proudly follows its philosophy and teaching methodology.
